If you’ve been eyeing a new Samsung Galaxy and OnePlus or Xiaomi flagship for later this year you need to read this before you swipe your card.
On September 1, 2026 Qualcomm. The company that builds the Snapdragon processor sitting inside most Android phones sold in the US is quietly flipping. A switch that will make your next phone cost more. Not “might.” Will. The only open questions are how much and which phones and that’s exactly what nobody else is telling you clearly. So let’s fix that.
Here’s the thing most coverage skips you’ve probably never heard of Qualcomm by name but you’ve used its chips every single day. Snapdragon processors power the brains of nearly every non-Apple flagship phone sold in the US Samsung’s Galaxy S series, OnePlus, Xiaomi and Oppo. A growing list of Windows laptops, smartwatches and even Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.
So when Qualcomm raises what it charges phone makers for that chip. It’s not an abstract corporate finance story. It’s the first domino in a chain that ends with a higher number on the price tag when you check out.
Qualcomm the biggest maker of smartphone processors is raising prices by a percentage in the double digits a change that takes effect for any products shipped after September 1. Qualcomm made it official during its fiscal Q3 2026 earnings release and CEO Cristiano Amon told CNBC directly “Cost went up prices are going to go up.”
According to Qualcomm’s own statement. The semiconductor industry is dealing with a broad-based increase in input costs across wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, advanced packaging and memory and other materials. In plain English everything that goes into making a chip got more expensive and Qualcomm decided it’s done absorbing that cost itself.
One detail that separates this from a routine price adjustment Qualcomm reportedly tried sourcing components from alternative suppliers to avoid the increase and it didn’t work. This isn’t Qualcomm padding its profit margin for the fun of it. A company that ran out of other options.
You can blame this on one industry-wide culprit: memory chips.
Severe semiconductor and memory supply constraints have forced fabrication partners like TSMC to pass higher manufacturing costs down. Qualcomm is now passing that same cost down to phone makers who will, in turn pass it down to you.
The scale of the memory shortage is honestly kind of wild. Market researchers at TrendForce found that average selling prices for LPDDR4X mobile memory rose at least 70–75% quarter-over-quarter in Q2 2026 and LPDDR5X rose 78–83%. That’s not a typo memory prices nearly doubled in three months.
What’s soaking up all that memory supply? A massive surge in AI data center construction which has consumed enormous volumes of memory chips and semiconductors. The same components that go into your phone. Server farms racing to build out AI infrastructure are essentially outbidding phone manufacturers for the same factory capacity.
To put a rough number on the increase itself. A Nikkei Asia report claimed the chip-level increase could land between 5% and 10% depending on the specific chip and the size of the customer’s order though Bloomberg’s double-digit figure appears to be the more widely cited estimate.

One nuance worth knowing manufacturers won’t take this lying down. Qualcomm’s own CFO Akash Palkhiwala noted during the earnings call that some manufacturers are already choosing older prior-generation Snapdragon chips specifically to dodge the higher cost of the newest silicon. So don’t be surprised if you see more affordable flagship phones in 2027 quietly running last year’s chip.
Here’s where I’ll be straight with you nobody has an exact number yet including Qualcomm itself. A double-digit percentage rise on the chip does not translate into a double-digit rise on the whole phone. Since the processor is only one part of the total device cost. A phone’s price is made up of the display, battery, camera, memory and build materials and margin the chip is just one slice.
Realistic expectation: think $30–$100+ more on a flagship Android phone launching in late 2026 or 2027 layered on top of whatever other component increases are already baked in. Budget and midrange phones are harder to predict manufacturers there are more likely to absorb the hit or downgrade the chip rather than raise the sticker price simply because their buyers are far more price-sensitive.

In other words Qualcomm’s hike isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s one link in a much longer chain of AI-driven memory shortages and rising foundry costs that’s been quietly reshaping smartphone pricing all year. If you’re wondering why phones in general feel like they keep creeping past the $1,000 mark this is a big part of the answer.
Does this affect the iPhone? Not directly. Apple designs its own A-series and M-series chips and doesn’t use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors for its main system chip so this specific price hike doesn’t hit iPhones the way it hits Android flagships. That said Apple’s chips are also made at TSMC which has raised its own prices separately.
When exactly does the price increase start? September 1, 2026. It applies to chip orders shipped after that date not to phones you buy today.
Will my current phone get more expensive? No. This affects new chip orders going forward not phones already manufactured and sitting in stores.
How much is Qualcomm actually raising prices by? Qualcomm hasn’t published an exact figure. Bloomberg’s reporting points to a double-digit percentage overall while. A Nikkei Asia report suggested a range of roughly 5–10% depending on the chip and order size.
