Before we dive in here’s a quick rundown if you’re new.
Trace is a free browser-based escape room game available on Cool Math Games. You start trapped in a strange mysterious house with no idea how you got there. Your job is to explore the environment find hidden items solve puzzles crack codes and eventually escape.
It’s not a fast game. According to Cool Math Games themselves even experienced escape room players should expect at least an hour of gameplay. If you’re new to this genre it could easily take two to three hours without any help.
The good news? The puzzles are all solvable with logic. There’s no random guessing. Everything you need is somewhere in the game you just have to find it.
Don’t Miss This: Trace has also been released as a remastered version on Steam with expanded puzzles and content. If you enjoy the browser version it’s absolutely worth checking out.
Here’s something most guides skip over but it matters a lot.
Trace does not work like typical point-and-click games. You won’t see cursor highlights or hover effects telling you what to interact with. Instead:
The #1 reason players get stuck in Trace isn’t that the puzzles are too hard. It’s that they don’t realize they need to click again to zoom in further. If something looks interactable keep clicking.
Estimated time: 15ā25 minutes | Difficulty: Medium
This is where your Trace journey begins. You wake up in a strange bathroom the door is locked and the only way out is through.
The very first thing you should do is look down at the pentagon panel near the floor in front of the toilet. Your goal is to rotate the arrows on each segment so that they trace the outline of a star shape.
Look at the star drawn at the top of the panel that’s your reference. Match the arrow directions to mirror that star. Once it’s correct press the center button. If it worked you’ll hear a click and a cabinet will open.
Grab the half-pair of scissors from the cabinet that just opened.
Turn to the sink area. The other half of the scissors is sitting right there in the sink basin. Pick it up.
Now go into your inventory and combine the two halves to create a complete pair of scissors. You’ll need them in just a moment.
Pro Tip: While you’re at the sink look up at the lightbulb fixture above the sink. Count and note the pattern of lit vs. unlit bulbs. You’ll need this pattern shortly.
Turn to face the mirror. Look carefully there’s a key hanging from a string attached to the mirror. Use your scissors to cut the string and add the key to your inventory.
Use that key on the small lockbox on the shelf nearby. Inside you’ll find a crumpled piece of paper. Add it to your inventory then tap it to unfold it.
The unfolded paper shows a rough sketch of the jagged mirror with an X marked on it. This is telling you to click on a specific tile next to the real mirror.
Go back to the mirror and click the area where the “X” would be on the actual wall. You’ll zoom into a hidden tile. Behind it is a picture of a fishĀ look closely at the dots and dashes on it. Match those directional markings to your colored arrow puzzle (the electricity-style panel).
Look for the picture frame near the floor next to the mirror. Click it to reveal a hidden safe. The combination is 5-4-7-2
Inside the safe is a lightbulb. Grab it.
On the left side of the toiletĀ there’s a cabinet with a pumpkin. Place the lightbulb inside the pumpkin. This will reveal five colored circlesĀ each has a stick pointing in a direction. Use these directions on the colored electricity panel to unlock it.
Once the electricity panel is solved the cabinet under the sink will open. Inside is a red tile with a key symbol on it. Pick it up this is your ticket out of the bathroom.
Walk to the locked bathroom door and insert the red key tile into the panel. A sliding puzzle will appear.
Here’s what you need to do:
Once the key is over the lock the door opens. Welcome to the hallway.
Estimated time: 20ā35 minutes | Difficulty: Medium-High
The moment you step out of the bathroom the door locks behind you. There’s no going back yet. Now you’re in a hallway leading to a living room and this room is packed with items and puzzles.
Before trying to solve anything do a full sweep of the room and grab every item you can:
Don’t Miss This: Read the hint on each item when you pick it up. The game gives you a clue about every object these hints are often the key to figuring out what puzzle each item belongs to.
Head to the bay window and use your Camera to snapshot the pattern of the planets visible through the window. Note their height positions: low, high, middle, high and middle.
Open the cabinet under the window and arrange the puzzle pieces inside to match that planet pattern exactly. This will unlock something you’ll need later.
Take the blue tin horse to the window near the bathroom hallway side. You’ll see a blue drawing on the glass. Click on the horse in your inventory to extend its neck then bend and adjust it until the horse’s eye lines up with the blue diamond on the maze drawing.
Once it’s lined up click the button on the giraffe to get a missing piece of the broken metal tablet.
Find the tall artwork opposite the bathroom door. Fit the metal tablet pieces together and match them to the puzzle on the artwork. A red button will appear.
Now you need to press six red buttons around the room in a specific order (shown by the symbols above the fish tank). Here’s the sequence:
Press all six in order and the grey box will open giving you a green key and a utility knife.
Use the green key on the green door to step outside onto the patio. Keep any items you find out here in your inventory the metal stars and figurines will be important later for the tower section.
Estimated time: 10ā15 minutes | Difficulty: Medium
The patio is a breath of fresh air literally but don’t relax. There are more puzzles waiting here.
You’ll see the other side of the giraffe puzzle window from here. Line up the giraffe again from this side and press the button to reveal a second battery.
Find the arrangement puzzle with black cubes. Set them in this order (left to right top to bottom):
Press the red button to receive another metal star.
Head back inside to the table with curved legs. Use your utility knife on the dotted line underneath to reveal a heart puzzle. Use the key that pairs with it to open the balcony door.
On the balcony collect the vampire figurine and any remaining metal stars. You also get a new view of the outside of the bathroom and living room helpful for perspective on upcoming puzzles.
Pro Tip: Use your camera to snapshot anything that looks like a pattern or sequence from the balcony. Some of these images feed directly into tower puzzles.:
Estimated time: 30ā45 minutes | Difficulty: Hard
This is where most players hit a wall. The tower has multiple floors a computer with mini-games and a series of connected puzzles that require information gathered from earlier in the game. Take it slow.
After escaping the house head to the tower nearby. To unlock the tower door you’ll need to solve the stars puzzle on the panel like Sudoku place the stars so no two are adjacent and no row or column has more than one. Once solved the door opens.
Inside look for a wooden frame with symbols near a painting of a white tower. Replicate the symbols you see on this item. Nearby there’s also a photo frame with multiple symbols separated by “>” iconsĀ take a picture of this. It shows you the order in which to interact with objects in the room.
Find the table with flowers and the machine in its drawer. You need to type a secret phrase into it. Where does the phrase come from?
Go to the computer in the tower. Use the robot to climb and look right on the bridge you’ll see a sequence of symbols: Circle, Square, Triangle, Star, Square, Triangle and Circle. Then use the submarine to find a message inside the tower chest that reads “I DID DEEDS”Ā the reverse of the number code from earlier.
Type I DID DEEDS into the machine in the table drawer. You’ll receive a dragon figurine.
On the computer find the Mathemagic program. An enemy with a number will come toward you use two numbers and a symbol to create an equal match and defeat it.
The symbols aren’t standard math operators you’ll need to do some trial and error. Once you complete the game you’ll know which symbol corresponds to which math operation. This is the key to unlocking the safe under the desk (which uses those symbols).
Inside the safe: a book with a launch date of 2793 and a sequence of planets in color order: orange earth-colored white orange blue and white.
Find the metal panel under the shelf with the word “password” on it. Use a screwdriver on it to reveal six symbols: <0-|->.
Enter this as the password on the computer to access the Tower program which also unlocks Mathemagic.
Head upstairs in the tower and find the panel under the yellow light. Enter the sequence of bridge symbols from left to right: Circle, Square, Triangle, Star, Square, Triangle and Circle.
Change the box’s launch date to 2793 and match the planet colors as shown in the books. Click GO. A short animation will play take a screenshot.
Head back to the house and go to the pyramid object in the bay window. Each black spot changes color. Match the colors on the pyramid to the planet diagram from the animation screenshot. When the correct colors are set the top of the pyramid pops off revealing the Pyramid Key.
Back in the tower’s main room use the pin board on the far wall to trace the image you photographed from the porch chair (a wizard’s hat you revealed this by opening the porch umbrella with a key from the tower).
This reveals an eight-light puzzle above your head. Click the lights in this exact order to turn them all off:
1 ā 2 ā 3 ā 5 ā 6 ā 7 ā 8 and 4
You’ll see an image of a stone plinthĀ this tells you where to place the figurines.
You’ve been collecting figurines throughout the game. Place each on the correct plinth:
Once all four are placed correctly you’ll receive a screwdriver as your reward.
Use the screwdriver to open the panel you found earlier. Head back to the upper level of the tower and use the symbols from the robot’s bridge view on the bridge panel itself.
This is the moment you’ve been working toward.
Now that you have the Pyramid Key head back to the bathroom door (yes all the way back). Use the Pyramid Key to unlock it and step inside.
You’ll also need the Pentagon KeyĀ which you should have from solving the pentagon puzzle earlier. Use it on the toilet lid.
The toilet wasn’t a toilet. It was an escape hatch.
