In Elden Ring picking the wrong build is not just frustrating. It is the difference between melting Malenia in three minutes and spending an entire weekend getting demolished by her Scarlet Rot.
The good news? You don’t have to figure this out alone.
We tested every major build category across the base game. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and Elden Ring Nightreign in both PvE and PvP and ranked them from absolute top tier dominators to please don’t do this to yourself bottom picks.
This is the only Elden Ring builds tier list you’ll need in 2025.
If you just need the fast answer before diving deep:
| Tier | Best Builds |
| S-Tier | Bleed Build Intelligence Sorcery Faith Incantation Bleed Dex Hybrid |
| A-Tier | Strength Build Lightning Faith Frost Build Night Comet Sorcery |
| B-Tier | Quality Build Arcane Dragon Communion Fire Faith |
| C-Tier | Poison Build Spear/Halberd Build Pure Dexterity |
| D-Tier | Whip Build Bow Only Build |
| F-Tier | Unarmed/Gimmick Builds (fun not functional) |
Want the full breakdown with exact stats weapons talismans and which build is right for your playstyle? Keep reading.
Let’s be straight with you:
A lot of tier lists on the internet are copy-pasted opinions with no real testing behind them. This one isn’t every build in this list was evaluated across four categories:
We also weighted post DLC performance heavily with the Shadow of Erdtree dropping in 2024 and Nightreign’s Patch 1.03 in late 2025. The meta has shifted significantly builds that were S-tier in 2023 may have dropped. Builds that looked average suddenly got buffed into greatness.
Here is what the tiers actually mean:
These builds do not just work they dominate. If you’re new to Elden Ring start here. If you’re a veteran these are still the most reliable options for clearing NG+ cycles.
Primary Stat: Arcane (50–60) + Dexterity (20–25)
Key Weapons: Rivers of Blood, Eleonora’s Poleblade or dual Nagakagas
Essential Talismans: Lord of Blood’s Exultation Millicent’s Prosthesis Shard of Alexander Rotten Winged Sword Insignia
The Bleed build has been the most popular and most powerful build in Elden Ring since launch and for good reason bleed (Hemorrhage) ignores a portion of an enemy’s defense and deals percentagem based HP damage that means it scales insanely well against high-HP bosses which is exactly where you need it most.
Why it’s S-Tier: Malenia arguably the hardest boss in the game is ironically more vulnerable to bleed than most enemies. Rivers of Blood can proc Hemorrhage in just a few swings. Boss melted problem solved.
Early Game Access: Pick the Samurai class. You’ll have access to the Uchigatana immediately which can be infused with Blood Affinity early on. Rivers of Blood is locked behind late game {Mountaintops of the Giants} but the Bloody Slash Ash of War bridges the gap perfectly.
PvP Performance: Still very strong but expect opponents to use Preserving Boluses to counter your bleed procs. The smart counter is mixing in Frost {dual katanas one with Frost one with Blood} so they can’t counter both status effects at once.
Post-DLC Status: Unchanged Still S-Tier. The DLC added the Lord’s Rune Talisman which buffs bleed proc damage even further.
Pro Tip: The combo of Eleonora’s Poleblade + Rivers of Blood dual wielded is the most visually satisfying and statistically broken bleed setup in the entire game. Use Bloodflame Blade incantation on top of it and watch health bars evaporate.
Primary Stat: Intelligence (60–70) + Dexterity (20)
Key Weapons/Spells: Moonveil Katana Rennala’s Full Moon Comet Azur Stars of Ruin and Glintstone Pebble
Essential Talismans: Graven-Mass Talisman Graven-School Talisman Magic Scorpion Charm Stargazer Heirloom
Pure magic in Elden Ring hits like a freight train. The Intelligence build gives you access to some of the most devastating ranged options in the game while the Moonveil Katana gives you a powerful close range fallback that also scales off Intelligence.
Why it’s S-Tier: Comet Azur with Terra Magica placed under your feet + Starlight Shards to sustain FP = one of the most absurd damage outputs in the entire game many bosses melt before they can even reach you. The Night Comet sorcery which enemies and bosses largely can not dodge adds another dimension of reliability.
Early Game Access: Start as Astrologer class. You’ll have Glintstone Pebble and Glintblade Phalanx right away. Moonveil requires killing Magma Wyrm Makar in Gael Tunnel accessible after Stormveil Castle.
PvP Performance: A-Tier in PvP sorcery has a learning curve for PvP since spells are projectiles that skilled players can dodge. Night Comet partially invisible closes this gap dramatically. Don’t telegraph your Comet Azur smart opponents will punish you for the long wind-up.
Post-DLC Status: The DLC added the Staff of the Great Beyond and new sorceries that further amplify this build. Still top-tier.
Pro Tip: Run two Staffs of Loss one upgraded to +25, one at any level for the passive boost alongside the Night Comet setup for a nearly invisible death machine.
Primary Stat: Faith (60–70) + Strength (30)
Key Weapons: Blasphemous Blade Giant’s Seal and Dragon Communion Seal
Key Incantations: Black Blade Elden Stars Lightning Spear and Flame of the Fell God Vyke’s Dragonbolt
Essential Talismans: Shard of Alexander Fire Scorpion Charm Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman and Ritual Sword Talisman
The Blasphemous Blade is without exaggeration one of the most forgiving weapons in Elden Ring. Its Ash of War Taker’s Flames deals massive fire damage and heals you with every hit. That alone makes it S-Tier for most players stack it with the right incantations and you have a build that answers every situation.
Why it’s S-Tier: The self-healing mechanic fundamentally changes how you fight. You stop fearing damage because every aggressive swing gives HP back. Combined with the DLC’s added faith damage buffs this build is arguably stronger in 2025 than it was at launch.
Early Game Access: Start as Prophet the build comes online properly after you reach Volcano Manor and defeat Rykard Lord of Blasphemy mid-game. Before that Lightning Spear and basic Flame incantations carry you.
PvP Performance: Excellent Taker’s Flames knocks down opponents creating huge openings. The knockdown was slightly nerfed in a recent patch but the damage output more than compensates.
Post-DLC Status: S-Tier the DLC added buffs that compound beautifully with this build including new faith scaling seals.
Primary Stat: Dexterity (55) + Arcane (45)
Key Weapons: Uchigatana Blood Nagakiba Rivers of Blood Bloodhound’s Fang
Essential Talismans: White Mask Lord of Blood’s Exultation Millicent’s Prosthesis
Think of this as the starter S-tier build. It’s not as explosively powerful as pure Arcane Bleed but it comes online much earlier in the game and is more forgiving to play.
Why it’s S-Tier: Dexterity weapons are fast fast weapons proc bleed faster. Faster bleed procs = more total damage with the White Mask helmet boosts attack when bleed procs nearby this build gets a self-buffing loop that feels effortless.
Don’t let A-Tier fool you. These builds are still excellent choices that will carry you through the entire game. They’re not S-Tier for minor reasons a specific weakness slower ramp-up or a higher skill ceiling.
Primary Stat: Faith (70+)
Key Gear: Gravel Stone Seal Lightning Scorpion Charm Godfrey Icon Flock’s Canvas Talisman
Lightning is special in Elden Ring because very few enemies especially bosses have meaningful lightning resistance. Lightning Spear is cheap on FP travels fast and when stacked with faith buffs hits absurdly hard at range.
Why A-Tier not S: More setup dependent than the Blasphemous Blade build. Requires Faith 70+ before the damage truly sings. Also some later DLC enemies show improved lightning resistance.
Primary Stat: Strength (50+) + cold-infused weapons
Key Weapons: Starscourge Greatsword Cold Bloodhound’s Fang Frozen Needle
Frostbite applies a debuff that increases the damage a frozen enemy takes by 20% and drains HP. Combined with the raw damage of Strength weapons, this creates enormous burst windows especially during boss staggers.
Why A-Tier (not S): Frost procs require time to build up against hyper aggressive bosses that barely let you swing, this can feel slower and more frustrating than bleed builds.
Primary Stat: Intelligence (70+)
Key Weapons: Staff of Loss x2
Key Spell: Night Comet
This is a specialized variant of the Intelligence build that deserves its own spot. Night Comet is a partially invisible sorcery that enemies and bosses largely cannot dodge unlike standard Glintstone Pebble which bosses step around routinely.
Why A-Tier: Incredible damage output and boss-killing reliability. Drops to A-Tier instead of S because it requires significant spell setup and has less melee fallback than Moonveil builds.
Primary Stat: Strength (66+) Vigor (60)
Key Weapons: Greatsword, Giant-Crusher and Grafted Blade Greatsword
Essential Talismans: Shard of Alexander and Green Turtle Talisman
Big sword big damage and stamina investment. The Colossal Strength build trades speed for the ability to poise-break almost everything in the game. When you stagger a boss and land a charged R2 with a Giant-Crusher. The damage numbers are genuinely shocking.
Why A-Tier (not S): Slow stamina recovery and slow attack speed make this build harder against extremely fast bosses like Malenia. In PvP it’s easier to dodge around than bleed or sorcery builds.
B-Tier builds are good. They’ll get you through the game no question but they either require more skill to maximize have notable holes in specific situations, or are clearly outclassed by the builds above them.
Primary Stat: Arcane (60+) + Faith (30)
Key Gear: Dragon Communion Seal, Dragon Claw incantation and Dragoncrest Greatshield
Dragon incantations Dragonfire, Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay deal hybrid elemental damage that very few enemies fully resist. The Arcane Dragon build leans into this with wide area attacks that handle large groups of enemies effortlessly.
Why B-Tier: High FP cost limited mobility during casts and the Arcane and Faith split means slower investment progression. Still tremendous fun to play.
Primary Stat: Faith (50+) + Strength (30)
Key Incantations: Flame of the Fell God Giantsflame Take Thee and Surge of Faith
The pure fire faith build sacrifices the Blasphemous Blade’s self-healing for raw fire AOE damage. Giantsflame Take Thee is one of the most satisfying spells in the game a colossal fireball that genuinely deals with crowd control.
Why B-Tier: Fire resistance is more common than lightning resistance particularly in Farum Azula and against fire themed bosses. The lack of self-healing also drops survivability compared to the Blasphemous Blade variant.
Primary Stat: Strength (40) + Dexterity (40)
Key Weapons: Bloodhound’s Fang, Banished Knight’s Greatsword and Golden Halberd
The jack of all trades build. Quality scaling means your weapons deal good damage from a balanced stat spread giving you access to the widest weapon variety in the game.
Why B-Tier: Spreading stats across two damage stats means you never hit the super-high damage peaks of focused builds. At endgame you’ll notice a real ceiling that S-tier builds don’t have.
These builds aren’t bad exactly. They have their moments but if your goal is to win as efficiently as possible there are better options in every single scenario.
The idea: Apply Poison to drain enemy HP over time while you play defensively.
The reality: Bleed does everything Poison does but faster and with higher proc damage. Poison’s damage over time ticks are simply too slow in a game where bosses hit like freight trains.
When it’s okay: Combined with other status effects in creative builds. Purely as a primary damage source? Pass.
Spears and halberds have great reach and can be used effectively behind shields. The Dragoon Halberd in particular is popular for its jumping attacks but as primary damage weapons with no status effect infusion they fall behind.
When it’s okay: Build around Golden Halberd’s Sacred Blade AoW for a faith-infused variant that gets bumped to B-Tier.
Pure Dex without any status effect infusion no bleed and no frost falls flat in the late game because physical damage scaling hits a wall against high poise and high-defense bosses. Dex weapons shine brightest when paired with Blood or Frost affinities which moves them into Bleed or Frost build territory anyway.
We’ll keep this brief because honestly you deserve to know.
D-Tier: Whip-Only Build Whips can’t critical-hit they deal chip damage. They require you to stand at a medium distance against bosses who want to stand in your face. The only reason this isn’t F-Tier is that experienced players can make it work through sheer technical skill.
D-Tier: Bow-Only Build Elden Ring is not designed around ranged bow combat. Arrows run out boss hitboxes make some ranged angles nearly impossible. Truly a suffering experience without supplemental melee tools.
F-Tier: Unarmed Only We respect the dedication. We do not respect the playstyle from a tier list standpoint. If you’re doing this you do not need a tier list you need therapy and respect.
Hold on before you scroll past. If you still don’t know which build to pick the next section is going to solve that problem in under two minutes.
Which Build Is Right for YOU? [which-build]
The tier list tells you what’s strongest. This section tells you what’s right for your playstyle.
Q1: Are you new to Elden Ring / Soulslike games? > Go with Blasphemous Blade Faith Build. The self-healing makes the learning curve dramatically easier.
Q2: Do you want to melt bosses as fast as possible? >Â Bleed Build (Rivers of Blood). No contest.
Q3: Do you love magic and playing from range? >Â Intelligence Sorcery Build start with Moonveil for close-range safety and progress to Comet Azur for big boss phases.
Q4: Do you like heavy weapons and tanky playstyles? >Â Colossal Strength Build. Get the Giant-Crusher never look back.
Q5: Are you primarily a PvP player? >Â Bleed Dex Hybrid for reliability or Night Comet Sorcery for a style that’s genuinely difficult to counter.
Q6: Do you want to experiment with status effects beyond bleed? >Â Arcane Dragon Communion or the Frost Strength Hybrid both have huge room to experiment.
Shadow of the Erdtree is harder than the base game. Enemies hit harder. Bosses are more aggressive status resistances are more common. Here’s how the meta adapts.
Scadutree Fragments are the DLC’s power progression system prioritize collecting them over any build optimization. A fully leveled Scadutree Blessing increases your damage and damage reduction significantly.
Elden Ring Nightreign is a different beast entirely. It’s a three player co-op roguelite set in the Lands Between and the meta plays completely differently from the base game.
Key Differences in Nightreign:
| Tier | Nightfarer | Why |
| S | Guardian | Block mechanic prevents one-shots in Deep of Night. Commander’s Standard + Stone Stake relic = devastatingly tanky DPS |
| S | Recluse | Magic burst DPS is unmatched. Empty FP fast then regen and repeat. Best for boss phases |
| A | Executor | Bleed-focused with dual status potential. Cursed Sword buffed in Patch 1.03. FP management is the skill ceiling |
| A | Duchess | Holy damage focus (final boss weak to holy). No need to rely on status effects |
| B | Wylder | Versatile. Ordovis’s Greatsword + Slate Whetstone is reliable but not top-tier DPS |
| B | Iron Eye | Status-focused ranged. Strong against specific bosses inconsistent vs. others |
Nightreign Meta After Patch 1.03: The aggressive combat meta rewards players who deal continuous damage rather than wait for openings. Builds centered on offensive Passive Effects and Relic Effects are now the most efficient damage per run options. Low-HP last stand setups that were once popular have been nerfed into irrelevance.
Best Team Composition: Guardian (tank/frontline) + Recluse (magic DPS) + Executor (bleed/status) is currently the strongest coordinated trio.
What is the #1 best build in Elden Ring? For most players especially in 2025 the Bleed Build using Rivers of Blood is the most reliable top-tier option.
It comes online relatively early (mid-game) destroys both regular enemies and bosses and requires minimal skill to get results from.
What is the easiest build to use in Elden Ring? The Blasphemous Blade Faith Build. The weapon heals you when you attack making the game significantly more forgiving. Perfect for first time players or anyone who finds the game’s difficulty punishing.
Are bleed builds still good in 2025? Yes bleed builds have remained S-Tier through every patch every DLC and into Nightreign. They are slightly less dominant in multiplayer scenarios where experienced players can counter-build but in PvE they remain the gold standard.
What’s the best build for the Shadow of Erdtree DLC? The Blasphemous Blade Faith Build is arguably the strongest for DLC content due to its self sustain in an environment where bosses hit much harder. Bleed still works great and Night Comet Sorcery is excellent against bosses that dodge regular projectiles.
What’s the best Nightreign class to start with? Guardian is the most recommended for new Nightreign players. The block mechanic significantly reduces the chance of being one-shot in Deep of Night mode giving you more time to learn boss patterns.
Can I use a Quality Build and still beat the game? Absolutely. Quality Builds are B-Tier not bad just outclassed by focused builds at the endgame ceiling. If you enjoy a wide weapon variety the Quality Build is perfectly viable for a full playthrough including the DLC.
What’s the best build for PvP in Elden Ring? Bleed-Dex Hybrid or Night Comet Sorcery. Bleed procs in PvP are high-pressure and difficult to play around. Night Comet’s invisible trajectory is genuinely hard to dodge consistently for most players.
How many builds are there in Elden Ring? Officially there are 16 recognized build archetypes. In practice hybrid builds expand this significantly there are dozens of viable combinations and the community continues to discover new setups.
The hardest part of Elden Ring isn’t the bosses. It’s the paralysis of choice. The fear of picking the wrong build and wasting 20 hours.
Here’s the truth: Any build from S-Tier to B-Tier will get you through the game. The difference between them is efficiency not possibility. What matters most is understanding why your build works so you can execute it when everything goes sideways.
Start with Bleed if you want to win, Start with Blasphemous Blade if you want to learn, Start with Sorcery if you want to feel like a wizard.
And when you finally beat Malenia? Tell us how long it took.
May grace guide your build, Tarnished.
